New short film: An introduction to intersectionality
The final format is now available to preview and download from the Members’ Resource Centre (MRC). As with all our short films, you can place a version on your Learning Management System or download an MP4 version from the Film Library.
Intersectionality considers how different characteristics such as race, gender, social class and sexual orientation can overlap to result in multiple forms of bias and discrimination. This short film explains the concept of intersectionality and shows how an intersectional approach can help us to achieve more equitable outcomes.
We have over 60 short films providing a 10 to 15-minute overview of the key learning points for a particular topic.
The brand-new course will be ready to preview and download 29th March 2023.
Combining thought-provoking drama and powerful lived-experience testimony with insight from leading equality, diversity and inclusion experts, Inclusion Essentials looks at the benefits of being an inclusive organisation, the barriers and challenges faced by minority and marginalised groups in the workplace and beyond, and how to create an inclusive working culture where everyone can thrive.
We believe this will be a fantastic mandatory course that you can take to all your employees, which has modules covering:
- Race and culture
- Religion and belief
- Sex discrimination and gender bias
- Gender identity and expression
- Sexual orientation
- Socio-economic status.
Sexual orientation – In development
An entirely new course on sexual orientation is in the works. A short version of the course will be released as part of the Inclusion Essentials update which will be available in the spring. The full course will follow in May with new subject matter expert interviews, dramas and a suite of powerful lived-experience interviews to accompany the course.
We will let you know more at the end of March when we communicate again.
Working with the Equality Act – Update
We know that several members use this version as well as Inclusion Essentials, so this is in development for later this year. This course explores where we are now since the Equality Act was passed in 2010, and any additions and amendments to its provision and protected characteristics. As well as considering the best practice implications for organisations, it will highlight positive action and strategies that support it.
The intersectional approach to diversity and inclusion
People are multi-dimensional in their identities and may identify with several different marginalised or minority groups at the same time. These overlapping identities can result in multiple and intersecting forms of bias, discrimination and disadvantage, both in the workplace and in wider society.
Intersectionality provides a framework for considering our different identities and experiences in order to understand the complexity of biases and prejudices that people can face and take steps to address any resulting inequality or discrimination.
In this webinar, we drew on expert insight, ‘lived experience’ interviews and original drama to look at how an intersectional approach can support inclusion and help to achieve more equitable outcomes.
Guides and learner notes
Due to the growing number of guides we have produced, these are now housed in a separate section. If you visit the ‘Skill Boosters Resources’ menu tab in the Members’ Resource Centre, you will see a separate section for Learner Notes and Guides. There is now a Welsh version of our Neurodiversity Guide on the Home Page and in this section. The guides can also be found on our main Skill Boosters website under ‘Resources.’
