Course description

While there has been a significant decline in overt racist behaviours over the past 40 or 50 years, subtle manifestations of racial bias continue to have a negative impact on people from an ethnic minority background. With studies showing that racial bias and prejudice are still a problem in many organisations, inclusive employers are recognising the need to engage with the issue at a grass-roots level to ensure that policies and procedures are fair and transparent and that everyone is able to discuss race in an open and constructive way.

Developed in partnership with Professor Binna Kandola, Senior Partner and co-founder of leading business psychology consultancy Pearn Kandola, this course takes a bold look at the nature of ‘modern racism’ and its impact in the workplace, and sets out the crucial roles that leaders, HR departments and learning and development teams have to play in tackling it.

This course will give a better understanding of:

  • the changing nature of racism
  • how racial bias, prejudice and discrimination manifest themselves in the workplace
  • the impact of racial and religious stereotypes
  • how to find out the extent to which racial bias is a problem in your organisation
  • key steps for leaders, HR teams and Learning and Development departments to take in tackling racism and race bias.

With old-fashioned racism it's the things that we do. With modern racism it's often the things that we do not do. So we do not offer support. We do not invite somebody to come into a group. We don't encourage somebody to speak up.
